8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek – Northern Circuit Route
The 8-day Northern Circuit itinerary is a scenic and gradual Kilimanjaro expedition designed to allow plenty of time for acclimatization. The route crosses the Shira Plateau, passes through the remote northern slopes, and eventually approaches the summit from the eastern side before descending through the southern route. Along the way, trekkers experience rainforest, moorland, high-altitude valleys, volcanic landscapes, and spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi.
Day 1: Lemosho Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your adventure begins with a morning transfer from Moshi to Lemosho Gate, where the necessary registration and preparations for the climb will be completed. While the mountain crew organizes the equipment and provisions, you can prepare yourself for the first stage of the trek.
The trail then enters the lush montane forest, where the surroundings are peaceful and shaded. The steady uphill walk provides an ideal introduction to the mountain without being overly strenuous.
After several hours on the trail, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp. Here, you will settle into your tent, enjoy dinner, and rest ahead of the following day’s hike.
Transfer: Approximately 1.7 hours / 80 km
- Trekking distance: 7 km
- Trekking time: 3–4 hours
- Starting elevation: 2,100 m
- Camp elevation: 2,650 m
- Elevation gain: 550 m
- Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Camping

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast, you will continue climbing through the changing vegetation toward the Shira Plateau. The dense forest gradually gives way to open moorland, creating a completely different mountain environment.
As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes wider and more dramatic. Shira Cathedral and other distinctive formations come into view, while the glaciers and upper slopes of Kibo provide an impressive backdrop.
The trail eventually reaches Shira 1 Camp, situated at approximately 3,610 m. Temperatures can be considerably colder here, particularly after sunset, so keeping warm and staying hydrated will be important.
- Trekking distance: 9 km
- Trekking time: 5–6 hours
- Starting elevation: 2,650 m
- Camp elevation: 3,610 m
- Elevation gain: 960 m
- Overnight: Shira 1 Camp – Camping
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Moir Hut
Today’s trek takes you farther across the expansive Shira Plateau. The relatively gradual ascent allows your body to continue adapting to the increasing altitude while you explore one of Kilimanjaro’s most impressive highland environments.
The route passes toward Shira Cathedral, a prominent rocky feature surrounded by rugged peaks and open valleys. Depending on the weather, you may also enjoy distant views toward Mount Meru.
Continuing across the Shira Caldera, the trail passes near Shira 2 Camp and Shira Cave before turning toward the more secluded Moir Valley. Your destination is Moir Hut, positioned at the base of the Lent Hills at around 4,200 m.
The remote setting makes this an excellent place to spend the night and further prepare for the higher elevations ahead.
- Trekking distance: Approximately 12 km
- Trekking time: 6–7 hours
- Starting elevation: 3,610 m
- Camp elevation: 4,200 m
- Elevation gain: 590 m
- Overnight: Moir Hut – Camping
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Moir Hut – Buffalo Camp
After breakfast, the trail climbs away from the Moir Valley toward the Lent Hills. You will make a short ascent toward the higher sections of the hills before returning to the main trail.
From here, the route joins the Northern Circuit and begins moving around the quieter northern side of Kilimanjaro. This section of the mountain is less frequented and offers a strong sense of wilderness.
The trail rises and falls across a series of ridges and valleys before reaching the area of Pofu and continuing toward Buffalo Camp. The changing scenery and expansive views make this a rewarding day on the mountain.
- Trekking distance: Approximately 12 km
- Trekking time: 7–8 hours
- Highest elevation reached: 4,200 m
- Elevation gain: 100 m
- Overnight: Buffalo Camp – Camping
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5: Buffalo Camp – Third Cave Camp
After breakfast, you will continue eastward along the Northern Circuit. The trail crosses a succession of smaller valleys and undulating terrain as you make your way across the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the altitude rises, creating a rugged and open landscape. Compared with the longer trekking days earlier in the journey, today’s walk is shorter, giving you additional time to relax and recover.
By the end of the day, you will arrive at Third Cave Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
- Trekking distance: 8 km
- Trekking time: 4–5 hours
- Starting elevation: 4,100 m
- Camp elevation: 3,800 m
- Elevation loss: 300 m
- Overnight: Third Cave Camp – Camping
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6: Third Cave Camp – School Hut
Today marks an important stage of the climb as you move toward the summit zone. After breakfast, the trail gradually climbs toward the Saddle, the broad high-altitude area separating Kibo from Mawenzi.
The landscape here is stark and almost lunar, with very little vegetation and extensive volcanic terrain. From the Saddle, you will continue toward School Hut, your final overnight camp before the summit attempt.
You are expected to arrive during the afternoon, allowing plenty of time to rest, eat, hydrate, and organize your equipment. An early bedtime is recommended because the final ascent will begin during the night.
- Trekking distance: 10 km
- Trekking time: 5–6 hours
- Starting elevation: 3,800 m
- Camp elevation: 4,800 m
- Elevation gain: 1,000 m
- Overnight: School Hut – Camping
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Day 7: School Hut – Uhuru Peak – Millennium Camp
Summit day begins in the early hours of the morning, around 1:00 a.m. After a light meal and final preparations, you will begin the slow ascent toward the crater rim.
The trail climbs over loose volcanic scree, and the combination of darkness, cold temperatures, and altitude makes this the most demanding section of the trek. Your guide will maintain a steady pace with regular breaks as you work toward Gillman’s Point on the crater rim.
Once at Gillman’s Point, you can take a short rest and, weather permitting, watch the sunrise over Mawenzi. From there, the trail continues around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
The final section takes you to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the summit of your expedition. After spending some time at the summit, you will begin the descent along the crater rim toward Stella Point and continue downhill.
You will pass Barafu Camp, where a packed lunch will be available, before continuing toward Millennium Camp. After this exceptionally long day, dinner and a well-earned night’s rest await at camp.

Day 8: Millennium Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
Your final morning on Kilimanjaro begins with breakfast before starting the long descent through the mountain forest toward Mweka Gate.
As you lose altitude, the vegetation becomes greener and denser, providing a pleasant contrast to the barren landscapes experienced during the summit stages.
After several hours of walking, you will reach Mweka Gate, where the trek officially concludes. Summit certificates will be collected from the park authorities for qualifying climbers before you meet your private vehicle for the return journey.
You will then transfer back to your hotel, where you can enjoy a hot shower, relax, and celebrate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
