5 days Mranagu route is a 4 nights 5 days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu route trek follows the popular Coca Cola route with permanent sleeping huts at the campsites. This 5 days Marangu route trek  has a lower success rate to reach Uhuru peak, due to the reduced number of days, steep inclines, and less time for acclimatization.

The Marangu route is the shortest route which gets over crowded because the ascent & the descent route is shared, however, Summit night from Kibo Hut is steep and passes Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak.

Day By Day trekking Itinerary for 5 days Marangu Route Trek

DAY 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara huts

Distance 7km

Duration: 4-5 hrs | Rainforest

Elevation: 1830m/6000ft to 2740m/9000ft

Depart Moshi early in the morning, for a 1 hour drive through the Marangu village to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, where you will pause for registration, as well as wait for the permit. Thereafter, you will enjoy trekking through the  impressive rainforest (composed of local flora and fauna and natural wildlife) scenery and windy trails , as per the guide’s instruction. The trails are quite muddy and slippery on the lower elevations, which guarantees the use of  gaiters and trekking poles.

DAY 2: Mandara hut to  – horombo hut

Distance: 11km/3mi

Duration: 6-8hrs | Mooreland

Elevation: 2740m/9000ft to 3690m/12,100ft

Wake up to a hearty breakfast, and exit the rain forest and proceed on an ascending path, through heathland, as you look for giant lobelias and groundsels. Proceed into open moorlands with small shrubs as dominant vegetation. Enroute, you will break for lunch, while you enjoy  amazing views of Mawenzi, then later arrive at the Horombo Huts later in the afternoon, at the base of the  spectacular Kibo Summit viewpoint. It is at this point, that  will begin to drop.

DAY 3: Horombo huts to Kibo huts

Distance:10km/6mi

Duration: 6-8hrs | Semi-Desert

Elevation: 3690m/12,100ft to 4695m/15,400ft

Breakfast will be served early, then continue through the dwindling heathland that merges into a moonscape as you enter the sweeping saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. Lunch will be enroute, as you proceed, then cross the surprisingly large saddle. You will also enjoy the spectacular views of the summit path up Kibo that you will be climbing the next days.

DAY 4: Kibo hut – summit(uhuru) – Horombo hut

Distance to summit : 4km /2.5 mi up | Duration:  5-7hrs |

Distance to Horombo hut 14km /9mi down | Duration: 5-6hrs | Glaciers, Snow Capped Summit

Elevation: 4695m/15,400ft to 5895m/19,340ft

Descent to 3690m/12,100ft

After a hot cup of coffee or black tea, then at anytime between 0000hrs and 0200 hrs, you will will start your amazing journey. The trek is characterized, as a mentally and physically challenging part of the trek, as you proceed to accomplish your long awaited dream peak. The trek follows a heavy scree and possibly snow towards Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. You will enjoy the breathtaking rewards views of spectacular sunrise during your short rest. (fast hikers may spot the sunrise from the summit). The last 1 hour to the summit – (Uhuru peak) always composed of snow encounters.

Upon reaching, little time will be allocated for victorious celebrations at the roof of Africa, alongside taking memorable photos, after which you will begin discending  to Mweka camp, with an enrought lunch break at Barafu camp. The path is made of the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife, which highly demands the use of gaiters  and trekking poles.

Spend your last night at Mweka Camp.

DAY 5: Horombo hut – Marangu gate – Moshi:

Distance: 18km/11mi

Duration: 6-7hrs | Rainforest

Elevation: 3690m/12,100 to 1830m/6000ft

The last days is alway filled with celebration and  appreciation of the whole team, as you bid farewell to the whole crew.  Thereafter embark on your last descent  downwards, stopping at the Mandara Huts for lunch. Dont forget to tip your guides, cooks, and porters, since you will be leaving them at this point, then head to  Marangu Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. From here, you will join your driver guide to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 45 minutes),  to proceed with your programs.
