5 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trek
- Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights
- Route: Marangu Route
- Highest Point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895m
The 5-day Marangu Route is one of the classic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Often known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it combines comfortable hut accommodation with a gradual journey through rainforest, heathland, moorland, and the high alpine zone before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.
ITINERARY
DAY 1: MARANGU GATE (1,879m) – MANDARA HUT (2,720m)
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, taking approximately one hour and covering about 40 km.
After reaching the Kilimanjaro National Park entrance, your team will complete the registration and permit procedures. While these formalities are being handled, you can take in the lively atmosphere at the gate as different climbing teams prepare for their mountain journeys.
Once ready, begin hiking into the lush rainforest. The trail winds through dense vegetation, with your guide introducing you to the area’s distinctive plants, wildlife, and natural surroundings.
The lower section of the route can become wet, muddy, and slippery, particularly during rainy periods, so suitable rain protection and trekking poles are strongly recommended.
Continue through the forest until you reach Mandara Hut, where you will spend your first night. The accommodation consists of comfortable wooden A-frame huts located in a peaceful forest clearing.
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Distance: Approximately 7 km
- Elevation Gain: 841 m
- Maximum Altitude: 2,720 m
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
DAY 2: MANDARA HUT (2,720m) – HOROMBO HUT (3,720m)
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind as the trail gradually climbs into the heath and moorland zones.
The landscape changes noticeably as dense forest gives way to smaller vegetation and open mountain scenery. Along the way, look out for distinctive Kilimanjaro plants such as giant lobelias and groundsels.
Continue ascending through the open moorlands, stopping along the way for lunch while enjoying impressive views toward Mawenzi Peak.
The afternoon hike brings you to Horombo Hut, positioned beneath the spectacular Kibo summit area. As you gain altitude, temperatures become noticeably cooler, particularly toward evening.
- Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
- Distance: Approximately 11 km
- Elevation Gain: 1,000 m
- Maximum Altitude: 3,720 m
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
DAY 3: HOROMBO HUT (3,720m) – KIBO HUT (4,720m)
Today’s trek takes you deeper into Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environment and is one of the more demanding stages of the route.
The trail continues steadily upward, passing the Last Water Point before reaching the expansive area known as the Saddle.
The Saddle is a broad, largely vegetation-free plateau situated between Kibo and Mawenzi, offering dramatic views of the two major volcanic peaks.
Continue across this stark alpine landscape toward Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt. The hike normally takes around 5–6 hours.
After arriving at Kibo Hut, enjoy an early dinner before preparing for an early night. Rest is especially important because the summit climb will begin around midnight.
- Distance: Approximately 9.5 km
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Maximum Altitude: 4,720 m
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

DAY 4: KIBO HUT (4,720m) – UHURU PEAK (5,895m) – HOROMBO HUT (3,720m)
Today is the summit day and the most challenging stage of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Your final ascent begins around midnight, when temperatures are at their coldest. Under the guidance of your mountain crew, climb slowly and steadily toward the crater rim.
The route passes the Hans Meyer Cave at approximately 5,220m before continuing upward across the steep upper slopes of Kibo.
Around sunrise, reach Gillman’s Point at 5,681m, located on the crater rim. Pause here to appreciate the sunrise and the dramatic surroundings before continuing along the crater rim.
After another approximately 1–2 hours of hiking, arrive at Uhuru Peak, 5,895m, the highest point in Africa.
Celebrate your summit achievement and take time for photographs before beginning the descent. Return to Kibo Hut, where you can enjoy a warm meal and take a short rest of approximately 1–2 hours.
After recovering, continue the descent toward Horombo Hut, where you will spend your final night on the mountain.
- Distance: Approximately 22 km
- Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
- Highest Point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
DAY 5: HOROMBO HUT (3,720m) – MARANGU GATE (1,879m)
After breakfast, begin your final descent from Horombo Hut toward Marangu Gate.
The trail takes you steadily downhill through the different vegetation zones before returning to the lush tropical rainforest.
Once you reach Marangu Gate, complete the park exit procedures and collect your Kilimanjaro summit certificate as a reward for successfully completing the climb.
Your private vehicle will then meet you at the gate and transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where your 5-day Kilimanjaro adventure comes to an end.
