School Huts Camp
It is a campsite situated at the base of the Kibo volcanic cone, typically utilized by climbers to ascend the mountain via the Northern Circuit Route.
School Huts Camp serves as the final lodging and camping along the Northern Circuit path, or the Grand Traverse path, prior to the ultimate ascent to Uhuru Peak, the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The School Hut camping on Mount Kilimanjaro is situated at an elevation of 4,710 meters (3,280 ft). On the Northern Circuit, Grand Traverse, and the more direct Rongai Routes, climbers employ it as their penultimate campsite prior to the final ascent.
The northern circuit route, being lengthy and infrequently traversed by climbers aiming to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, features this campsite as a tranquil accommodation point along the trail, experiencing minimal climber traffic, as the majority of climbers prefer the more popular routes that utilize either Barafu Camp or Kibo Hut as the final base before the ascent to the summit.
The entire campground space is diminutive relative to the other campsite on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The school huts in the campsite lack any structures except for pit latrine facilities. Due to the camp’s high-altitude location, water exists as dry ice and is unavailable in liquid form for sanitation purposes until rain occurs and rainfall is collected. The sole water source available here is that transported by porters.
The school huts camp exclusively permits lodging in tents, necessitating that participants provide their own tents. It is one of the last campsites, alongside Arrow Glacier, Kibo, and Barafu Hut, encountered prior to reaching the summit, and it is among the rare locations on Kilimanjaro where snowfall occurs.
Location of School Huts Camp
School Huts Camp is situated on the eastern slopes of the Kibo volcanic crater, a few kilometers north of Kibo Huts and east of Reusch Crater.
The School Huts campground is situated inside the alpine desert vegetation of Mount Kilimanjaro, characterized by a complete absence of flora due to exceptionally low temperatures, strong winds, and stony terrain that inadequately supports plant life.
Third Cave to School Huts Camp
On the seventh day, the Northern Circuit Route traverses the School Hut Campsite. The elevation commences at 3,870 meters and ascends to 4,750 meters at the finish line. The hike from Third Cave Campsite to School Hut Campsite requires a total duration of 5 hours.
Expedition from School Huts Camp to Uhuru Peak
From the School Huts (4,750m/15,600ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft) and thereafter to Mweka Camp (3,110m/10,200ft).
Commence the last ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest summit in Africa, around midnight. Utilize your flashlight to navigate throughout the subsequent six to eight hours. Appropriate equipment is necessary for both extremes, as temperatures might plummet at night yet rise significantly by the conclusion of the trekking day.
The most challenging segment of the entire trek is the ascent to the crater rim. The ascent to Gilman’s Point, where the crater rim is situated, is notably steep. The trek from Gilman’s to Uhuru Peak is gradual and rather uncomplicated.
The hike is, however, extensive and challenging because of the altitude. Following the summit festivities, you will descend to Kibo Huts.
You will descend directly to Mweka Hut from the summit, where lunch will be served. The duration of this descent is approximately six hours.
Savor your last lunch on the mountain and thereafter indulge in a well-deserved respite that evening. Mweka Hut is perhaps the sole site along this route where beer and soda are available.
What routes utilize the School Huts Camp to reach the summit?
The School Hut Camp is hardly utilized, as it serves solely as the final lodging location for the Northern Circuit Route, the longest path on Mount Kilimanjaro.
